- Worth a try before you call anything: amber light, car driving normally, just one constant run, no charge.
- Once the car is in limp mode, a long run will not shift it. The window has closed.
- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under acceleration — stop booking long drives and get it looked at.
The motor has been showing you already
Belated news, the light. The symptoms usually mount for weeks before it appears:
- power dropping away, particularly climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise as before
- fuel economy getting worse
- silently, the stop/start bows out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the box
On its own, none of that is conclusive. Next to the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
