Before the light, what the car was telling you
Symptoms have generally been growing for weeks before the light ever arrives. Late news, in other words:
- less power, especially pulling uphill
- you see the revs fall short of where they once went
- consumption that is worse than it was
- stop/start quietly packing in
- the interior stinking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
Alone, none of that is conclusive. It is a fair bet the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
