First thing: it is not automatically the DPF. Cleaning is not where a visit begins. A diagnostic is — plenty of faults appear as the same signal.
Second thing: how you run it between now and then matters.
- A long even run may even now manage it, provided the light is amber and the car drives normally. Costs zero, so attempt that before ringing.
- A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has now shut.
- Get it looked at rather than using it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
The motor has been telling you already
Late news, the light. The symptoms tend to mount for a while before it shows:
- going uphill, the power tails off
- the revs no longer pull the way they always did
- the fuel consumption is worse
- a stop/start that has quietly bowed out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under acceleration
That is not conclusive on its own. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
