New Town, City of Edinburgh: Mobile DPF Cleaning
On-site DPF cleaning comes to the motor. A technician arrives at your place in New Town, cleans the diesel particulate filter while it is attached to the motor, runs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you came with.
You'll have a number by phone before anyone goes, the clean starting from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.
The light is showing and the vehicle is short of power — that is how we usually come across people, and roughly what this page deals with.
The DPF light is on. What now?
Not the unit, automatically. Opening thing to note. A scan goes before any work, because that same panel light has plenty of candidate faults behind it.
The use you get in the meantime matters. That is the second thing.
- Worth a shot before you ring anything: amber light, car driving as normal, just one even run, no outlay.
- A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has already shut.
- A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under the throttle, is the point to stop arranging long drives and call.
Before the light, what the motor was warning you
By the time the light appears, things have usually been going wrong for weeks. It is belated news:
- less power, above all pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- fuel use turning worse
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under the throttle
That is not conclusive alone. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
The cause diesel particulate filters block near New Town
For a DPF, the least kind driving is the sort you meet around a residential suburb such as New Town. Not one bit of it lasts long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to the local primary school, Frederick Street crawling at the morning rush, five minutes to Greens on the Go, the run to Edinburgh Waverley. The soot load builds up rather than clearing.
Where you sit does not assist either. The M8 is under 5 miles from New Town and Edinburgh is under a mile away, so unless something carries you out that way routinely, weeks slip past without the long steady run that might scour the filter alone.
The moment a DPF regeneration can no longer complete
What limp mode means is the car defending itself. Pulling power is limited, the revs will not climb, and the regeneration the filter wants can no longer complete — which is the entire difficulty, because a long drive works by starting that regeneration.
Sound advice, that motorway run — right up until the moment it is not. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are the far side of that point, and the filter needs a clean rather than road work.
The vehicle stays put for on-site DPF cleaning round New Town
Nothing comes off the car. That catches out people. The DPF stays fixed where it is and the work is done around it, on a forecourt, in a works car park, any place it can stand for two hours or so.
First a diagnostic. Running ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a mass, the sensors, the glow plugs, the associated components — all of it read before a thing is cleaned.
Then comes the clean itself: cleaning fluid in through the car's own access point, opening out inside the filter and lifting what a regeneration never can. Badly blocked filters sometimes need a second pass.
A regeneration is next, burning off what the clean has loosened. Either it is done as a monitored drive out of New Town, with you present, or it goes where the motor sits and the running data is read after.
Both reports come through by email, so the figures from either end are on record. The second scan is what confirms the change, puts out the light and logs whatever is still open.
What a DPF clean will not cure
Only one fault is fixed by treatment: the filter choked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:
- a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a blockage that is not there
- a stuck-open EGR valve
- a fault in the AdBlue system
- worn glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever runs
- the turbo pushing oil into the filter
Finding that out is the first scan's whole job. When it is found to be one of those, you are warned before any work gets going rather than after you have handed over anything.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter gutted cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is illegal, so that is no remedy. What gets searched for as DPF renewal swaps nothing: your own filter is cleaned in place and goes back into work.
What DPF cleaning costs in New Town
A call-out charge holds whatever follows, and takes in the visit, the booking fee, the scan and the advice given. The clean itself starts from £299.
No flat rate would be honest, so the figure is agreed by the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. What you drive and where you are both shift it: New Town itself, out at Roxburghs Court, or further out across the EH postcode area.
Treatment that will not help is not cleaning you pay for, and the scan is what says so. Because the visit, the scan and the advice have been done, the call-out charge still stands.
The work comes with a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare, including an engineer coming back out to New Town if the light comes back inside that window.
Great service. No garages would touch the issue so to find this company that comes to your house was brilliant. Effective communication and booked in quickly which I appreciated. The job was completed before I could offer them a cuppa! I would recommend this company.
Andras was excellent. He arrived on schedule, was knowledgeable, professional and courteous and took care of our car. So far the clean seems to have worked and we hope it continues to so we can avoid the hugely expensive DPF replacement.
Well informed and efficient service, everything explained well and advised on what to do next as I had ongoing issues, now everything is working as it should, definitely recommend.
The vehicles we clean and the patch we reach round New Town
Whatever it is — estate, van, light commercial, HGV, plant, construction machinery, agricultural vehicle — the one on-site service holds, and the filter never quits it.
Week in week out there is usually someone on Frederick Street, so New Town hardly ever means a detour, and Roxburghs Court, West End and the villages past Danderhall follow. Farther out through City of Edinburgh is nonetheless worth ringing about — coverage is UK-wide, and it is the calendar rather than the distance that decides between this day and the next.

Frequent questions on DPF cleaning across New Town
- Is a long drive enough alone?
- It can, provided you catch it in time and limp mode has not begun. Five minutes to Greens on the Go and back will not do it; motorway speed, kept for a stretch, will.
- The visit lasts how long?
- Reckon on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean adding to that where the filter is badly loaded.
- What does it run to around New Town?
- It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the check and the advice. Pricing is done by phone, since what you drive and where you live both shift the figure.
- Must I be present in person?
- Space for the motor to stand, for a couple of hours, is all that is required. Not you. Choosing to be there is fine: the regeneration then goes out on the open road, monitored.
- Travelling to New Town — how soon?
- That hangs on the diary, but it is often same-day or next-day. Ring 0303 330 1830 what is available across the EH area.
- Does the filter leave the vehicle?
- Not on the call-out service — it is treated where it stands. Getting a filter off or putting one back on amount to anything work we do whichever way.
- The light comes back — then what?
- Aftercare sits inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer heading back to New Town.
