The light is last news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have usually been building for a while:

- the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
That is not conclusive on its own. Alongside the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is full.
Why diesel particulate filters clog near New England
