Before the light, what the car was telling you
Belated news, the light. The symptoms tend to build for some time before it shows:
- pulling uphill, the power drops away
- the revs no longer pull the way they used to
- worse fuel consumption
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
None of that is conclusive by itself. It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.
What chokes diesel particulate filters near New Earth

- injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration starting in the first place
- turbo problems, with oil reaching the filter
