By the time the light shows, things have usually been slipping for a while. It is belated news:
- less power, above all going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- consumption that is worse than before
- stop/start silently giving up
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
That is not evidence on its own. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.
