Symptoms have usually been building for weeks before the light so much as appears. Last news, in other words:

- without a word, the stop/start bows out
- the car stinking of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not conclusive. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.
