What the motor has been showing you
By the time the light arrives, things have generally been deteriorating for some time. It is late news:
- less power, especially climbing uphill
- you notice the revs never reach where they always went
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
That is not proof by itself. Next to the light, it is a fair bet the filter is full.
The reason diesel particulate filters choke round Muker
The driving that goes with a village like Muker is the poorest sort for a DPF. The school run to Gunnerside Methodist Primary School, B6270 at a crawl at the morning rush, five minutes to the local shops, the run to Garsdale — none of it runs long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration.
