What the motor has been telling you
The light is last news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have generally been growing for some time:
- dropping away on power, particularly uphill
- you see the revs stop short of where they used to go
- fuel use that is worse than before
- the stop/start silently bowing out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. It is a fair assumption the filter is full once the light is showing too.
