The motor has been telling you already
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been growing for some time:
- going uphill, the power falls off
- you find the revs stop short of where they once went
- fuel consumption going worse
- quietly, the stop/start gives up
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
Alone, none of that is proof. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.
