Before the light, what the car was telling you
By the time the light arrives, things have normally been slipping for some time. It is last news:
- power dropping away, above all pulling uphill
- you see the revs never reach where they always went
- consumption that is worse than before
- stop/start without a word giving up
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under hard acceleration
Any one of those, taken singly, is not evidence. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is full.
Why diesel particulate filters block around Mount Wise
