Symptoms have usually been growing for some time before the light so much as arrives. Late news, in other words:
- less power, above all pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull like they did
- fuel consumption going worse
- without a word, the stop/start bows out
- the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
None of that is evidence by itself. With the light beside them, the filter is a fair guess.

A couple more worth bearing in mind. Getting the filter cut out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a working DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your original filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use.
