The DPF light is on. What then?
Not the filter, necessarily. First thing to get straight. A scan happens before all cleaning, because that same panel light has several possible faults behind it.
How the car is driven in the meantime makes a difference too.
- Motor still driving normally on an amber light — try a long constant run first. It costs nothing at all and frequently shifts the filter without help.
- Motor already gone into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not touch it now.
- Get it seen to rather than running it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.
What the motor has been telling you
Symptoms have normally been mounting for some time before the light ever shows. Last news, in other words:
- less power, particularly pulling uphill
- you notice the revs fall short of where they used to go
- the fuel use is worse
- stop/start silently giving up
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under the throttle
That is not conclusive by itself. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
