Before the light, what the car was warning you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been building for some time:
- climbing uphill, the power tails off
- an engine whose revs will not rise as before
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- the stop/start quietly giving up
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under acceleration
Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair assumption.
