The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been building for a while:
- less power, above all pulling uphill
- you find the revs stop short of where they once went
- consumption that is worse than it used to be
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the box
None of that is evidence by itself. With the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is blocked.
