What the car has been telling you
Belated news, the light. The symptoms usually build for weeks before it shows:
- power tailing off, particularly pulling uphill
- you find the revs never reach where they always went
- the fuel consumption is worse
- the stop/start quietly giving up
- the car smelling of diesel, or smoke when you press on
That is not conclusive alone. It is a fair assumption the filter is full once the light is on as well.
Why diesel particulate filters choke around Mead End
For a DPF, the poorest driving is the kind you get across a rural hamlet such as Mead End. Look at an ordinary week: Broad Chalke CofE Primary School and back, Church Street at a crawl before nine, a five-minute run to The Co-operative Food, a run to Tisbury. - a turbo putting oil through the filter

A couple more worth noting. Leaving the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a working DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your original filter is cleaned in place and returned into use.
