Not the DPF, necessarily. First thing to say. That light can follow plenty of faults, not only one, so the visit begins with a scan and not with a clean.

- A long steady run may yet manage it, provided the light is amber and the car drives as normal. Costs nothing at all, so try that before calling.
- Motor already dropped into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not touch it now.
- Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop booking long drives and get it checked.
What the car has been showing you
Last news, the light. The symptoms generally grow for a while before it shows:
- falling off on power, above all uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they once did
- fuel use that is worse than it was
- a stop/start that has silently given up
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
That is not proof on its own. Next to the light alongside them, the filter is a fair bet.
Why diesel particulate filters choke near Lynton
The driving that belongs to a coastal town like Lynton is the worst sort for a DPF.
