- less power, above all going uphill
- you find the revs fall short of where they always went

- a stop/start that has silently packed in
- the cabin smelling of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. Alongside the light, it is a fair bet the filter is loaded.
