- Once the motor is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has gone.
- Get it looked at rather than driving it — diesel in the car, or smoke on the throttle, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
Before the light, what the car was warning you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been growing for a while:
- less power, especially going uphill
- you see the revs stop short of where they used to go
- the fuel economy is down
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the box
That is not proof alone. The light beside them indicates a full filter.
Why diesel particulate filters clog around Loan
Being a village, Loan throws up exactly the motoring a DPF copes with least well. A regeneration wants time and heat, and gets none: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on B825 at the morning rush, not on ten minutes to Aldi, and not on the dash to Polmont.
