Symptoms have generally been mounting for weeks before the light even arrives. Last news, in other words:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they always did

- the stop/start silently packing in
- the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
None of that is proof alone. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is illegal, so that is no remedy. What gets looked up as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your filter is cleared in place and goes back into work.
