Signs the car has been showing you
Last news, the light. The symptoms tend to mount for a while before it shows:
- climbing uphill, the power falls off
- you see the revs never reach where they always went
- worse fuel consumption
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you press on
Any one of those, taken singly, is not evidence. The light alongside them suggests a blocked filter.
Choked diesel particulate filters round Lix, and the reason

- EGR valves that hang open
- the AdBlue system playing up
- a regeneration that simply never runs, because of glow plugs or injectors
- oil working through the filter from a worn turbo

Gutting the filter out is not a fix: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle will fail its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the wording people type in, though nothing is replaced — your own filter is treated in place and put back into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.
