The DPF is not always what is wrong, and that comes first. Cleaning is not where a visit starts. A check is — a number of faults appear as the same signal.
Second thing: how you handle it between now and then matters.
- Car even now driving fine on an amber light — have a go at a long steady run first. It costs zero and frequently sorts the filter without help.
- Once the vehicle is in limp mode, driving will not touch it. The window has closed.
- Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it looked at.
Before the light, what the vehicle was telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have generally been growing for some time:
- going uphill, the power falls off
- the revs no longer climb the way they once did
- the fuel use is worse
- a stop/start that has quietly bowed out
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under acceleration
That is not conclusive alone. Alongside the light with them, the filter is a fair guess.
The cause diesel particulate filters clog around Littlemoss

And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
