Little Ouse, Cambridgeshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

With on-site DPF cleaning, we travel to the motor. The technician arrives at your door over in Little Ouse and starts. The diesel particulate filter is cleaned still on the motor, a DPF regeneration follows, and you end up with the filter you came with.

You'll know a number by phone before anyone goes, the clean starting from £299, and the visit lasting typically around 2 hours.

If the light is showing and the car is short of power, this page is the right one. That is how most owners end up here.

Your DPF light is lit — what next?

First thing: it is not always the filter. That light can follow a number of faults, not only one, so the visit opens with a check and not with a clean.

It counts what you do with the car between now and the visit.

  • Amber light, vehicle yet driving fine — a long steady run can yet clear it by itself. Costs zero, and worth attempting before you ring anything.
  • Car already dropped into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not reach it now.
  • Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it looked at.

What the car has been warning you

Symptoms have generally been mounting for weeks before the light even arrives. Last news, in other words:

  • dropping away on power, especially uphill
  • revs that will not rise the way they always did
  • worse fuel consumption
  • stop/start silently giving up
  • diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the box

Any one of those, taken alone, is not evidence. With the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is loaded.

Why diesel particulate filters choke around Little Ouse

The motoring that goes with a village like Little Ouse is the poorest kind for a DPF. The school run to Southery Academy, White House Road at a halt at half past eight, ten minutes to The Co-operative Food, the run to Littleport — not one bit of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. The soot collects rather than burning away.

Except when you have a routine reason to get out to the M11, under 25 miles from Little Ouse, or over to Ely under 10 miles away, weeks slip past without a sustained run. Geography is unhelpful.

DPF regeneration, and the stage limp mode stops it

What limp mode amounts to is the car defending itself. With output limited and the revs pinned, the regeneration the filter requires can never happen at all. That matters, because setting off one is exactly what a sustained run does.

Sensible advice, that motorway run — up until the day it is not. Once the car is in limp mode you are beyond that line, and the filter wants cleaning rather than road work.

On-site DPF cleaning where the vehicle stands in Little Ouse

Nothing comes off the motor. That surprises people. The DPF remains fixed where it is and the work happens around it, on a drive, in a works car park, wherever it can sit for two hours or so.

Nothing is started until other faults are ruled out. That requires a diagnostic first: live data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by mass, and a look over of the sensor readings, glow plugs and connected parts.

Then comes the clean itself: a cleaning solution in through the car's own entry point, opening out inside the filter and freeing what a regeneration will not. Where the filter is badly loaded, plan on a second pass.

Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has lifted. If you are there, that is run as a monitored drive out of Little Ouse; if not, on the spot where the motor stands, with the real-time data checked afterwards.

A second check verifies the change, resets the warning light and lists anything still outstanding. Both reports are emailed, so you keep the before and after figures to hand.

What a DPF clean will not touch

Only one fault is fixed by cleaning: the filter choked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:

  • a pressure sensor reporting a block that is not there
  • an EGR valve jammed open
  • AdBlue system faults
  • injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration starting at all
  • oil working through the filter from a failing turbo

Which is why the check goes first. When one of those is the fault, you learn of it in advance rather than once the money has left already.

Two things more worth bearing in mind. Getting the filter gutted is not a fix — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.

What DPF cleaning runs to across Little Ouse

Treatment begins from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it covers the call-out, the booking, the checks and the advice.

Not one flat rate would be straight, so the number is agreed on the phone once we know the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. A pair of things change it: what you run, and where you are — Little Ouse itself, out at Brandon Bank, or further out across the CB postcode area.

You are not billed for treatment that the check says will not work. The call-out charge even so stands, because the visit, the check and the advice have happened.

Aftercare is covered by a 30-day warranty: should the light reappear within it, an engineer returns to Little Ouse.

Nic was helpful answered any questions I had did the job quick and told me what I should be driving in every 1-2 weeks hopefully this has sorted the issue thanks.

Caroline H.

Andras was excellent. He arrived on schedule, was knowledgeable, professional and courteous and took care of our car. So far the clean seems to have worked and we hope it continues to so we can avoid the hugely expensive DPF replacement.

Rupert C.

The vehicles we clean and the patch we cover around Little Ouse

The filter is done in place on all of them: cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs, construction and plant machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is moved anywhere.

Our engineers are along White House Road week in week out, so Little Ouse is hardly ever a journey of its own, and the same run covers Brandon Bank, Redmere and the villages out past Black Horse Drove. Ring anyway from farther out across Cambridgeshire. Coverage runs UK-wide, and the day you are given depends on the calendar rather than how far away you are.

Things Little Ouse drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Will a long drive shift it?
If you spot it early enough, and the vehicle is not in limp mode, sometimes. It takes a steady run at motorway speed, not ten minutes or so to The Co-operative Food and back.
Does the visit take long?
Expect typically around 2 hours — severely loaded filters sometimes need a second pass, which lengthens it.
What does it cost across Little Ouse?
It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge covering the visit, the check and the advice. Quoting is done by phone, since what you own and where you live both move the number.
Have I got to be present?
The car wants a place for two hours or so. You do not need to be in it. The regeneration can be run as a watched drive if you would rather be there.
Travelling to Little Ouse — how soon?
That comes down to the diary, but it is often same-day or next-day. One phone call to 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what the CB area has open.
Is the filter removed from the vehicle?
Cleaned where it stands, on this service, so no. Nor does getting a filter off nor bolting one back on is work we do.
The light reappears — then what?
An engineer comes back out to Little Ouse — the 30-day warranty covers aftercare.
