What the car has been showing you
The light is last news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been mounting for weeks:
- less power, particularly pulling uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they used to
- fuel use that is worse than it used to be
- quietly, the stop/start bows out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under the throttle
That is not evidence alone. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is there too.
What chokes diesel particulate filters round Lippiatt
For a DPF, the worst use is the kind you meet across a residential suburb such as Lippiatt.
