Lever Edge, Greater Manchester: Mobile DPF Cleaning
On-site DPF cleaning comes to the motor. No workshop, no filter leaving. An engineer travels to your place in Lever Edge, cleans the diesel particulate filter where it is, performs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you started with.
The visit runs typically around 2 hours, the clean starts from £299, and the figure is agreed over the phone before anyone leaves.
The light is showing and the vehicle is low on power — that is how we normally come across people, and precisely what this page deals with.
The DPF light is on. What now?
The DPF is not necessarily what is wrong, and that goes first. A clean is not where a visit begins. A diagnostic is — plenty of faults show up as the same warning.
The driving you manage in the meantime counts. That is the other thing.
- Motor yet driving as normal on an amber light — try a long constant run first. It costs zero and regularly shifts the filter without help.
- Once the car is in limp mode, a long run will not touch it. The window has closed.
- Get it looked at rather than running it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.
The vehicle has been showing you already
Late news, the light. The symptoms usually grow for weeks before it appears:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- you see the revs fall short of where they once went
- worse fuel consumption
- the stop/start silently giving up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
None of that is conclusive by itself. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.
Why diesel particulate filters choke around Lever Edge
For a DPF, the worst use is the type you find in a residential suburb such as Lever Edge. Not one bit of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to Lever Edge Primary Academy, Lever Edge Lane standing at half eight, ten minutes to Barkat Food Store, the dash to Bolton. Instead of burning off, the unburnt soot banks up.
The M61 stands under a mile from Lever Edge, Salford under 10 miles out, and unless something takes you out that way regularly, entire weeks slip past without the sustained run that empties a DPF. Geography does not help.
The stage a DPF regeneration can no longer complete
It is self-defence: that is all limp mode amounts to. The entire catch is that a long drive works by triggering a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not climb and power is capped.
Running it up the motorway is the common advice, and it stands up to a line. Once the car is in limp mode you are past that line, and the filter wants treatment rather than driving.
Where the car stands is where the DPF is done in Lever Edge
On your driveway, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can stand for a couple of hours: the job is done with the filter even now bolted on, which is the part most drivers do not anticipate.
The ECU is read first, giving soot load by percent and by mass, along with a check of sensor readings, glow plugs and related components, so nothing is started while another fault is still in play.
A cleaning solution next is injected through the access port on that car, expanding inside the filter to lift soot and ash a regeneration alone will never budge. A second pass is sometimes required on heavily loaded filters.
Then a regeneration, to clear what the clean has lifted. Come with the motor and it becomes a monitored drive out of Lever Edge. Leave it and the regeneration goes statically, with real-time data verified once it is done.
Finally the diagnostic runs again — the change confirmed, the light cleared, anything still showing logged. Both reports arrive with you by email, so the numbers are on record.
When a DPF clean is not the answer
A filter clogged with soot and ash is the one thing cleaning fixes. It will not help:
- sensors, temperature or pressure, reporting a blockage that is not real
- an EGR valve held open
- an AdBlue system fault
- glow plugs or injectors preventing the regeneration completing at all
- turbo failure, with oil getting into the filter
That is what the first diagnostic is for. If it proves to be one of those, you are told before any work starts rather than after you have settled up for it.
DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is exchanged: the filter you already own is cleaned where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it cut out a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth bearing in mind.
Figures for DPF cleaning around Lever Edge
The clean begins from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and covers the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that follows.
Publishing a flat rate would not be truthful. We settle it over phone, once the vehicle and its likely needs are clear. Whereabouts you are matters as much as what you own: Lever Edge itself, Edge Fold nearby, or farther out in the BL postcode area.
Treatment that will not help is not cleaning you pay for, and the check is what says so. What still applies is the call-out charge, since the visit took place, the diagnostic was carried out and the advice was given.
A 30-day warranty takes in aftercare on the clean, and that includes an engineer heading back out to Lever Edge if the light comes back inside the period.
The engineer who came (Daz) was very efficient explained the whole process to me. It was clear he had a great deal of experience on dpf problems and their resolutions. Job well done.
I phoned at short notice and they managed to fit me in the same day. The fix has worked a treat.
Dan came out on time, did the job perfectly and explained each step of the process clearly to me, along the way; with tips on how to prevent any future DPF cloggages. This is a reliable company, and judging by Dan, with great, reliable technicians! Thanks Dan!
Where we get to near Lever Edge, and what we clean
One mobile service covers cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, construction and plant machinery and agricultural machinery, and on every one the filter is cleaned where it sits rather than moved anywhere.
Lever Edge is hardly ever a special trip: our engineers are out on Lever Edge Lane most weeks, and the same run picks up Edge Fold, Great Lever and the villages out past Bolton. Further out across Greater Manchester is nonetheless worth phoning about — coverage is UK-wide, and it is the schedule rather than the distance that decides between today and tomorrow.

Usual questions on DPF cleaning across Lever Edge
- Does a long run clear it?
- Sometimes, if you catch it early enough and the vehicle has not dropped into limp mode. Ten minutes to Barkat Food Store and back will not do it; motorway speed, kept for a stretch, will.
- How long does the visit run?
- Expect typically around 2 hours — severely clogged filters sometimes take a second pass, which extends it.
- Cost in Lever Edge — what is it?
- Treatment starts from £299, and the call-out charge on top pays for the visit, the check and the advice. The vehicle and your address both move the price, so we settle it on the phone.
- Is it needed for me to be around?
- The motor requires a space for two hours or so. You need not be in it. Choosing to be there is welcome: the regeneration then is done out on the move, monitored.
- When can someone come to Lever Edge?
- You are in for often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is currently in the calendar. Call 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what is available across the BL area.
- The filter — does it come off the car?
- It is treated where it is, on the mobile service. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not a job we do.
- And if the light returns?
- The 30-day warranty takes in aftercare, including an engineer coming back to Lever Edge.
