The filter is not always what is at fault, and that comes first. That light can arise from a number of faults, not just one, so the visit begins with a diagnostic and not with a clean.
How the motor is driven in the meantime matters too.
- A long even run may still be enough, provided the light is amber and the vehicle drives as normal. Costs nothing at all, so have a go at that before ringing.
- Once the motor is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has gone.
- Get it looked at rather than using it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
What the vehicle has been showing you
Late news, the light. The symptoms tend to mount for some time before it appears:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- worse fuel economy
- the stop/start without a word packing in
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under acceleration
None of that is proof on its own. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
The reason diesel particulate filters block near Leitfie
