Laverlaw, Scottish Borders: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The motor remains where it is — call-out DPF cleaning comes to it. Your car isn't taken off and the filter will not come off. A fitter comes at your address over in Laverlaw, clears the diesel particulate filter on the motor and carries out a DPF regeneration.

The visit takes typically around 2 hours, the clean begins from £299, and the number is fixed over the phone before anyone leaves.

If the light is showing and the car is short of power, this page is for you. That is how most drivers get to us.

The DPF light is on. What then?

Not the DPF, automatically. Main thing to note. A number of faults put the identical light on the same panel, which is why a visit opens with a scan rather than with a clean.

It matters what you manage with the motor between now and the appointment.

  • Amber light, motor yet driving fine — a long constant run can still shift it by itself. Costs nothing, and worth a try before you ring anything.
  • That window has gone once the motor has fallen into limp mode. Driving will not get there now.
  • Get it seen to rather than driving it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.

The vehicle has been telling you already

By the time the light appears, things have usually been slipping for a while. It is late news:

  • less power, especially climbing uphill
  • revs that will not climb the way they used to
  • the fuel economy is down
  • a stop/start that has meekly given up
  • smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car

None of that is conclusive by itself. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.

Why diesel particulate filters choke around Laverlaw

The driving that goes with a small village like Laverlaw is the worst type for a DPF. Think about a typical week: the local primary school and home again, B7062 at a halt before nine, a quick trip to The Co-operative Food, a dash to Stow. Nothing there goes on long enough or gets hot enough to complete a regeneration. What should burn away stays behind.

Geography does not help either. The M8 is under 25 miles from Laverlaw and Edinburgh is under 25 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way regularly, weeks go by without the sustained run that might empty the filter on its own.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working

What limp mode means is the motor looking after itself. Power is held down, the revs will not pull, and the regeneration the filter requires can never complete — which is the real catch, because a proper drive works by setting off that regeneration.

So the usual advice to get it up the motorway is good advice, right until it is not. The filter requires a clean rather than road work once the motor has slipped into limp mode.

Call-out DPF cleaning where the motor stands in Laverlaw

Nothing leaves the motor. That surprises people. The DPF stays bolted where it is and the work is done around it, on a forecourt, in a works car park, wherever it can stand for two hours or so.

The ECU is taken first, showing soot load by proportion and by mass, along with a review of sensors, glow plugs and related hardware, so nothing is touched while another fault is still possible.

A cleaning solution then is injected through the entry point on that motor, spreading inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift. Where the filter is severely loaded, allow for a second pass.

Next, a regeneration burns off everything the clean loosened. Either it goes as a monitored drive out of Laverlaw, with you along, or it runs where the vehicle waits and the running data is verified after.

Then a second check, confirming the change, putting out the warning light and noting anything still logged. Both sets of figures are emailed over, so the before and after figures are kept.

The failures a DPF clean cannot answer

A filter clogged with soot and ash is the one thing a clean cures. It will not help:

  • sensors, pressure or temperature, showing a blockage that is not real
  • a jammed EGR valve
  • AdBlue system problems
  • injectors or glow plugs that prevent a regeneration running at all
  • a turbo passing oil through the filter

The first check is there for just that. You are warned before the work gets going, not after you have handed over, if it turns out to be one of those.

Gutting the filter out is not a fix: without a functioning DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is against the law. DPF renewal is the term people type in, though nothing is replaced — your original filter is cleared in place and sent back into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.

The figure for DPF cleaning around Laverlaw

A clean opens from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it takes in the call-out, the booking, the checks and the advice.

Once we are told what you drive, and about what the filter will take, the number gets settled over phone. A single price for everyone would not be truthful. What you run and where you are both move it: Laverlaw itself, across at Cardrona Village, or otherwise out across the EH postcode area.

Where the check says a clean will not work, you are not charged for treatment. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone came out, carried out the diagnostic and gave you the advice.

Aftercare is covered by a 30-day warranty: should the light reappear within it, an engineer heads back to Laverlaw.

Had my cars dpf cleaned 3 days ago and warning light has not come on. Its a little early to tell if its fixed, but so far so good.

Where we get to near Laverlaw, and what we clean

A single mobile service spans cars, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant machinery and farm vehicles, and on every one the filter is done on the vehicle rather than carried anywhere.

Most weeks there is by then someone on B7062, so Laverlaw hardly ever means a detour, and Cardrona Village, Glentress and the villages past Innerleithen come with it. Coverage runs UK-wide, so farther out around Scottish Borders is still worth a phone call, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

Things Laverlaw drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Is a long drive enough on its own?
It might, provided you spot it early and limp mode has not begun. Five minutes to The Co-operative Food and back will not be enough; motorway speed, held for some time, will.
About how long does it take?
That is typically around 2 hours, though a severely blocked filter can need cleaning twice, which takes longer.
Across Laverlaw, what does it cost?
It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge paying for the visit, the scan and the advice. The vehicle and your address both change the price, so we settle it on the phone.
Is it necessary for me to be around?
You need not stand with it — the vehicle simply requires a spot to stand for a couple of hours. If you would prefer to come along, the regeneration can be carried out as a monitored drive instead.
When can someone travel to Laverlaw?
Depending on the calendar, often same-day or next-day is typical. Ask 0303 330 1830 what is free across the EH area.
Is the filter taken off the vehicle?
Cleaned where it stands, on this service, so no. Lifting a filter off or fitting one back on count as anything work we do whichever way.
The light reappears — then what?
Covered by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer coming back to Laverlaw.
