Symptoms have generally been growing for a while before the light so much as arrives. Belated news, in other words:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- you find the revs stop short of where they always went
- fuel economy turning worse
- stop/start without a word giving up
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under acceleration
On its own, none of that is evidence. Next to the light alongside them, the filter is a fair bet.
The cause diesel particulate filters choke near Langley

Two more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter cut out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is treated in place and put back into use.
