Belated news, the light. The symptoms tend to mount for a while before it arrives:
- power tailing off, especially climbing uphill
- you notice the revs stop short of where they used to go
- economy that is worse than before
- a stop/start that has quietly bowed out
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. The light with them suggests a loaded filter.
Clogged diesel particulate filters around Lancefield, and the cause

And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.
