The light is belated news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have normally been building for weeks:
- dropping away on power, especially uphill
- you find the revs never reach where they once went
- fuel use getting worse
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under the throttle
Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. The light alongside them indicates a full filter.
