- A long constant run may yet be enough, provided the light is amber and the vehicle goes fine. Costs nothing, so have a go at that before ringing.
- A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has already closed.
- Stop booking long drives and get it looked at if the car smells of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.
Signs the car has been sending you
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been deteriorating for some time. It is belated news:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- the revs no longer pull the way they always did
- fuel consumption getting worse
- without a word, the stop/start gives up
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter hollowed out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is illegal, so that is no solution. What gets typed in as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your own filter is treated in place and goes back into work.
