Before the light, what the car was warning you
By the time the light appears, things have generally been deteriorating for some time. It is last news:
- less power, especially going uphill
- you see the revs stop short of where they used to go
- the fuel economy is worse
- silently, the stop/start gives up
- the cabin stinking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
That is not proof on its own. The light alongside them points at a full filter.
Choked diesel particulate filters round Knock, and the reason

Two more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter cut out is not a solution — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF fails its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your existing filter is cleared in place and sent back into use.
