The car has been showing you already
Symptoms have normally been growing for some time before the light ever arrives. Last news, in other words:
- power falling off, particularly going uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they used to
- consumption that is worse than it was
- stop/start without a word giving up
- the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
On its own, none of that is evidence. The light alongside them indicates a loaded filter.
