What the vehicle has been telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been growing for a while:
- less power, particularly pulling uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they used to
- fuel consumption getting worse
- a stop/start that has meekly given up
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken singly, is not conclusive. The light alongside them indicates a loaded filter.
