Symptoms have usually been mounting for some time before the light ever shows. Belated news, in other words:
- climbing uphill, the power drops away
- the revs no longer rise the way they always did
- the fuel economy is down
- the stop/start without a word packing in
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in the car
Any one of those, taken alone, is not proof. The light with them indicates a loaded filter.
Why diesel particulate filters clog round Kirby Hill
