Kippilaw, Scottish Borders: Mobile DPF Cleaning
The motor sits in place — on-site DPF cleaning comes to it. No garage, no filter going anywhere. An engineer drives out to your place over in Kippilaw, clears the diesel particulate filter in place, runs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you arrived with.
You'll have a figure by phone before anyone leaves, the clean starting from £299, and the visit taking typically around 2 hours.
The light is already on and the car is short of power — that is how we generally find people, and roughly what this page is about.
What to try when the DPF light shows
The DPF is not automatically what is wrong, and that goes first. Treatment is not where a visit opens. A diagnostic is — a number of faults appear as the same signal.
Second thing: how you run it between now and then makes a difference.
- Car yet driving as normal on an amber light — have a go at a long constant run first. It costs nothing at all and regularly sorts the filter without assistance.
- That window has closed once the motor has dropped into limp mode. A drive will not get there now.
- A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under acceleration, is the stage to stop planning long drives and call.
What the motor has been showing you
Belated news, the light. The symptoms usually grow for weeks before it arrives:
- power falling off, above all going uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they used to
- worse fuel use
- stop/start without a word giving up
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken alone, is not conclusive. Next to the light, it is a fair assumption the filter is blocked.
What blocks diesel particulate filters near Kippilaw
The day-to-day driving that belongs to an area like Kippilaw is the least kind kind for a DPF. A regeneration needs long enough and heat, and gets neither: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on A699 at half eight, not on five minutes to Co-op Food, and not on the run to Tweedbank. Instead of burning off, the soot banks up.
Where you sit does not help either. The A74(M) is under 50 miles from Kippilaw and Edinburgh is under 50 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way regularly, whole weeks slip past without the long unbroken run that could clear the filter on its own.
DPF regeneration, and the stage limp mode kills it
The motor is looking after itself, which is what limp mode is. Power is limited, the revs will not climb, and the regeneration the filter needs can no longer run — which is the whole catch, because a long drive works by setting off that regeneration.
The standard advice — get it up the motorway — is good, up until it is not. The filter wants a clean rather than more driving once the motor has slipped into limp mode.
Where the car stands is where the DPF is done round Kippilaw
Most drivers do not see coming this part: the filter stays on. The job is done with the DPF still fitted to the vehicle — on your front, in a work car park, wherever the motor can stand for a few hours.
Nothing is touched until other faults are ruled out. That involves a check first: real-time data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by actual weight, and a review of the sensors, glow plugs and associated parts.
After that comes the clean itself: a cleaning solution in through the car's own access port, opening out inside the filter and loosening what a regeneration will not. Severely blocked filters sometimes require a second pass.
Then a regeneration, to clear what the clean has loosened. Ride along with the motor and it turns into a monitored drive out of Kippilaw. Drop it and the regeneration goes statically, with real-time data checked once it is done.
Then a second diagnostic, confirming the change, resetting the warning light and logging anything still outstanding. Both reports are emailed, so the before and after figures are kept.
The failures a DPF clean cannot answer
One thing is what cleaning answers — a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does little for:
- sensors, pressure, showing a block that is not real
- an EGR valve held open
- AdBlue system failures
- a regeneration that never starts, because of glow plugs or injectors
- turbo failure, with oil entering the filter
Finding that out is the first diagnostic's purpose. You are told before the work starts, not after you have paid, if it turns out to be one of those.
Gutting the filter out is not a fix: without a functioning DPF a vehicle will fail its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the wording people search for, though nothing is replaced — your own filter is cleared in place and put back into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.
Figures for DPF cleaning across Kippilaw
The cleaning starts from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the diagnostic and the advice that comes with it.
Naming a flat rate would not be truthful. We settle it over phone, once the car and its likely needs are clear. What you drive and where you are both change it: Kippilaw itself, out at Clarilaw, or farther out across the TD postcode area.
If the check writes cleaning out, there is no charge to pay for it. What even so holds is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the diagnostic was run and the advice was given.
The clean comes with a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare, including an engineer coming back out to Kippilaw if the light comes back inside that period.
Huge thank you to Carolina and Andras for an exceptionally efficient and prompt service. 4 hours from the time I placed my initial call to the DPF being cleaned. We'll definitely be using you again.
Liam did a thorough job and kept the car nice and clean. He thoroughly explained all he had done. Well done!
Thank you very much for your service, I would like to say how nice it was to meet Nat and you have an amazing rep in your company very happy with the service i have received.
The vehicles we clean and the area we reach near Kippilaw
The filter is treated on the vehicle on all of them: cars, vans of any size and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, construction and plant machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is carried anywhere.
The same trip that keeps technicians on A699 most weeks takes in Kippilaw, Clarilaw, Prieston and the villages beyond Midlem. Coverage runs UK-wide, so even further out through Scottish Borders is still worth a phone call, and what settles between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.

Things Kippilaw drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Can I merely take it for a long drive?
- It can, provided you catch it in time and limp mode has not set in. Five minutes to Co-op Food and back will not do it; motorway speed, held for some time, will.
- Roughly how long does it take?
- It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily blocked filter can require a second clean, which lengthens that.
- What does it come to across Kippilaw?
- The call-out charge covers the visit, the scan and the advice; the clean itself opens from £299. We settle it on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both change the price.
- Is it necessary for me to be around?
- You need not stand with it — the vehicle simply requires a spot to sit for a couple of hours. The regeneration can be done as a supervised drive if you would rather ride along.
- Can someone come to Kippilaw soon?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is already in the diary. One ring to 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what the TD area has open.
- Will the filter be lifted off?
- It is treated where it is, on the mobile service. Nor does lifting a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
- And if the light comes back?
- Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer coming back to Kippilaw.
