What to do when the DPF light shows
The filter is not automatically what is to blame, and that goes first. A diagnostic happens before all treatment, because that same panel light has several possible faults behind it.
How the motor is run in the meantime matters too.
- Worth a try before you call anything: amber light, car driving normally, just one constant run, no outlay.
- Vehicle already fallen into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not shift it now.
- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it checked.
What the motor has been warning you
Late news, the light. The symptoms usually build for a while before it appears:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they used to
- worse fuel consumption
- stop/start without a word giving up
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under the throttle
Any one of those, taken singly, is not conclusive. The light beside them suggests a full filter.
Why diesel particulate filters block around Kinnoir
For a DPF, the poorest use is the type you get around a village such as Kinnoir. None of it lasts long enough or is hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration: the school run to the local primary school, A97 standing at the morning rush, a few minutes to Tesco, the hop to Huntly. Instead of clearing, the soot banks up.
Unless you have a standing need to drive out to the M90, over 50 miles from Kinnoir, or across to Aberdeen under 50 miles away, weeks slip past without a long unbroken stint. Geography is unhelpful.
The point a DPF regeneration can no longer complete
What limp mode comes down to is the motor protecting itself. Pulling power is limited, the revs will not pull, and the regeneration the filter wants can not happen — which is the whole problem, because a long drive works by starting that regeneration.
So the usual advice to run it up the motorway is sound advice, until it is not. Once the motor is in limp mode you are past that line, and the filter requires treatment rather than road work.
Where the car stands is where the DPF is treated across Kinnoir
The filter does not budge. That is the detail most drivers do not see coming: the job takes place with the DPF still fitted to the motor, on your front, in a work car park, wherever the motor can stand for a couple of hours.
First a scan. Real-time ECU data, the soot load as a percentage and as a weight, the sensors, the glow plugs, the connected hardware — all of it logged before any of it is cleaned.
After that comes the clean itself: a cleaning solution in through the motor's own access port, opening out inside the filter and lifting what a regeneration cannot. Sometimes a filter is loaded enough to take doing twice.
A regeneration is next, burning off what the clean has freed. Either it is done as a monitored drive out of Kinnoir, with you there, or it goes where the car stands and the live data is verified after.
Then a second scan, confirming the change, resetting the warning light and noting anything still outstanding. Both read-outs are emailed, so the before and after figures are kept.
Where a clean is not the solution
A clean answers one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does no good for:
- the wrong signal from a temperature or pressure sensor
- a failed EGR valve
- an AdBlue system fault
- worn glow plugs or injectors, so no regeneration ever starts
- turbo failure, with oil reaching the filter
Which is why the diagnostic comes first. You are told before all work begins, not after you have settled up, if it turns out to be one of those.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter hollowed out fails its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no solution. What gets looked up as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your existing filter is treated in place and goes back into use.
The cost of DPF cleaning in Kinnoir
