The light is last news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been growing for weeks:
- less power, especially climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as before
- worse fuel consumption
- a stop/start that has silently packed in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
None of that is proof alone. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is full.
