Before the light, what the car was warning you
By the time the light arrives, things have usually been deteriorating for a while. It is belated news:
- falling off on power, particularly uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- worse fuel consumption
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
None of that is evidence by itself. The light with them indicates a loaded filter.
Choked diesel particulate filters round Itlay, and the why
For a DPF, the least kind use is the sort you find in a rural hamlet such as Itlay. The school run to Stratton Church of England Primary School, Dowers' Lane at a crawl at the morning rush, a few minutes to Waitrose, the hop to Kemble — not one bit of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration.
