What the vehicle has been telling you
Belated news, the light. The symptoms usually mount for a while before it shows:
- going uphill, the power tails off
- you see the revs never reach where they used to go
- economy that is worse than it used to be
- stop/start without a word packing in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
On its own, none of that is conclusive. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.
