Symptoms have normally been building for some time before the light so much as appears. Late news, in other words:
- power dropping away, particularly pulling uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they used to
- the fuel economy is poorer
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
Any one of those, taken alone, is not evidence. It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is on as well.
