Hotwells, Bristol: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The car remains put — on-site DPF cleaning goes to it. No garage, no filter coming off. A technician travels to your door across Hotwells, clears the diesel particulate filter where it is, carries out a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you started with.

Nobody travels until the number is fixed on the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean opens from £299.

The light is on already and the car is short of power — that is how we usually find people, and what this page covers.

What to try when the DPF light is on

First thing: it is not automatically the filter. That light can arise from a number of faults, not just one, so the visit starts with a scan and not with a clean.

The motoring you manage in the meantime tells. That is the second thing.

  • Amber light, vehicle even now driving fine — a long steady run can still clear it on its own. Costs nothing, and worth a try before you book anything.
  • A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has already gone.
  • A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the point to stop arranging long drives and book it in.

Before the light, what the car was showing you

Symptoms have usually been building for a while before the light even appears. Belated news, in other words:

  • power tailing off, above all pulling uphill
  • you notice the revs never reach where they once went
  • the fuel economy is poorer
  • the stop/start without a word giving up
  • diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the box

Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.

What clogs diesel particulate filters round Hotwells

The motoring that comes with a residential suburb like Hotwells is the poorest kind for a DPF. Run through a normal week: Hotwells Primary School and back, Hopechapel Hill at a halt before half nine, a five-minute run to The Co-operative Food, a hop to Clifton Down. Not much there goes on long enough or gets hot enough to complete a regeneration. Unburnt soot that should burn away banks up instead.

Save when you have a regular need to head out to the M32, under 3 miles from Hotwells, or across to Bristol under a mile away, whole weeks pass without a sustained stint. Geography is no help.

DPF regeneration, and the moment limp mode stops it

The car is defending itself, which is what limp mode means. Output is limited, the revs will not rise, and the regeneration the filter needs can not complete — which is the real catch, because a proper drive works by triggering that regeneration.

Sensible advice, that motorway run — up until the moment it is not. In limp mode you are past that stage: cleaning is what will work, not more driving.

The motor stays where it is for on-site DPF cleaning in Hotwells

Nothing is taken from the motor. That surprises people. The DPF remains fixed where it is and the work goes on around it, on a driveway, in a works car park, any place it can sit for two hours or so.

Nothing is touched until other faults are cleared. That means a diagnostic first: running data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by weight, and a check of the sensors, glow plugs and connected hardware.

After that comes the clean itself: solution in through the vehicle's own access port, spreading inside the filter and loosening what a regeneration will not. A second pass is sometimes needed on heavily blocked filters.

Then a regeneration, to clear what the clean has lifted. Ride along with the car and it becomes a monitored drive out of Hotwells. Drop it and the regeneration goes statically, with real-time data verified once it is done.

Finally the scan runs again — the change proven, the light cleared, anything still showing logged. Both reports come to you by email, so the numbers are on record.

Where cleaning is not the answer

One thing is what a clean answers — a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does no good for:

  • sensors, pressure or temperature, flagging a restriction that is not real
  • an EGR valve jammed open
  • AdBlue system failures
  • glow plugs or injectors preventing the regeneration running at all
  • a turbo putting oil through the filter

The first scan is there for exactly that. You are told before all work gets going, not after you have handed over, if it turns out to be one of those.

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter gutted will fail its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no fix. What gets looked up as DPF renewal exchanges nothing: your own filter is cleaned in place and goes back into use.

Prices for DPF cleaning in Hotwells

Any visit carries a call-out charge — travelling to you, setting up the booking, doing the scan and passing on the advice. The clean itself begins from £299.

No flat rate would be truthful, so the price is settled on the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need. What you own and where you are both change it: Hotwells itself, across at Leigh Woods, or further out in the BS postcode area.

If the check writes cleaning out, there is nothing to pay for it. You even so pay that charge: someone travelled, carried out the scan and gave you the advice.

Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light reappear within it, an engineer returns to Hotwells.

Excellent service from Daz Burrows from DPF fixer. Very thorough and care taken to give a full and clear explanation of any problems. Definitely worth the cost for giving me peace of mind.

Owen P.

Arrived as promised the next day. Very good explanation of the process. Went ahead with the clean and the car is now very responsive and quick with no warning lights. Thank you Ashley.

Vehicles we clean, and where we reach round Hotwells

Cars and estates, vans of any size and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant machinery, farm vehicles — the one on-site service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is treated on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.

Week in week out there is by then someone on Hopechapel Hill, so Hotwells hardly ever means a detour, and Leigh Woods, Canons Marsh and the places past Abbots Leigh are on the way. Phone anyway from further out around Bristol. Coverage extends UK-wide, and the slot you are offered hangs on the schedule rather than how far away you are.

Questions Hotwells drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Does a long run sort it?
Quickly enough, and with the motor out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. That means motorway speed for a steady run, rather than a brief trip to The Co-operative Food.
How long does the visit run?
Allow typically around 2 hours — severely clogged filters sometimes take a second pass, which lengthens it.
In Hotwells, what does it cost?
It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge covering the visit, the scan and the advice. Both the vehicle and where you are move it, which is why settling it goes by phone.
Do I have to be there?
The motor wants a space for two hours or so. Nobody expects you to be in it. The regeneration can be run as a monitored drive if you would prefer to come along.
Travelling to Hotwells — how soon?
You are offered often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is already in the diary. One ring to 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what the BS area has available.
Is the filter removed from the vehicle?
On the call-out service, no: the filter is treated in place. Taking a filter off or fitting one back on come to anything a job we do whichever way.
Suppose the light returns?
An engineer travels back out to Hotwells — the 30-day warranty takes in aftercare.
