Holywell, Herefordshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The car sits where it is — on-site DPF cleaning travels to it. The technician turns up at your address in Holywell and sets up. The diesel particulate filter is cleared still on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration follows, and you keep the filter you started with.

Nobody leaves until the figure is fixed on the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.

Most owners find us with the light already on, and the vehicle short of power. That is the situation this page is written for.

What to check when the DPF light comes on

First thing: it is not necessarily the filter. Cleaning is not where a visit opens. A check is — several faults appear as the same light.

How the motor is handled in the meantime makes a difference too.

  • Vehicle still driving fine on an amber light — have a go at a long constant run first. It costs nothing at all and regularly sorts the filter without assistance.
  • Vehicle already fallen into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not shift it now.
  • Stop booking long drives and get it checked if the interior stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you pull away.

The motor has been showing you already

Symptoms have generally been building for some time before the light ever arrives. Last news, in other words:

  • tailing off on power, above all uphill
  • an engine whose revs will not pull like they did
  • fuel use turning worse
  • quietly, the stop/start gives up
  • smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside

Alone, none of that is evidence. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.

What chokes diesel particulate filters round Holywell

The driving that belongs to a rural hamlet like Holywell is the least kind sort for a DPF. The school run to Staunton-on-Wye Endowed Primary School, B4352 at a halt at half eight, a few minutes to The Co-operative Food, the run to Hereford — not one bit of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration. The soot banks up rather than burning away.

Neither is far from Holywell: under 25 miles to the M50, under 10 miles to Hereford. Neither is on the way to anywhere most weeks, though, so the run that would empty a filter simply never gets made.

The moment a DPF regeneration can no longer run

It is self-defence: that is all limp mode means. The real catch is that a long drive works by setting off a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not pull and power is capped.

Sensible advice, that motorway run — up until the moment it is not. In limp mode you are the far side of that stage: cleaning is what will work, not more road work.

The filter does not come off. That is the part most drivers do not expect: the job takes place with the DPF yet fitted to the car, on your driveway, in a work car park, wherever the vehicle can stand for a few hours.

Nothing is cleaned until other faults are ruled out. That involves a diagnostic first: live data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by mass, and a check of the sensor readings, glow plugs and associated hardware.

Then comes the clean itself: a cleaning solution in through the motor's own access port, spreading inside the filter and freeing what a regeneration cannot. A second pass is sometimes required on heavily blocked filters.

Next, a regeneration drives off everything the clean freed. If you are there, that is done as a monitored drive out of Holywell; if not, on the spot where the vehicle sits, with the running data checked after.

Finally the scan runs again — the change verified, the light reset, anything still outstanding noted. Both reports reach you by email, so the numbers are on record.

When a DPF clean is not the answer

Cleaning fixes one thing: a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:

  • sensors, temperature or pressure, reporting a blockage that is not real
  • a jammed EGR valve
  • the AdBlue system failing
  • a regeneration that never runs, because of glow plugs or injectors
  • oil working through the filter from a faulty turbo

The first check is there for precisely that. Where one of those is the fault, you learn of it at the outset rather than once the money has changed hands already.

A couple more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter cut out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a working DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your own filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.

What DPF cleaning runs to around Holywell

Each visit takes a call-out charge — travelling to you, setting up the booking, carrying out the diagnostic and offering the advice. The clean itself starts from £299.

Once we have what you run, and roughly what the filter will want, the number gets agreed on the phone. A single price for everyone would not be straight. What you run and where you are both move it: Holywell itself, out at Bycross, or farther out within the HR postcode area.

Cleaning that will not work is not cleaning you pay for, and the scan is what says so. What even so holds is the call-out charge, since the visit took place, the scan was run and the advice was passed on.

Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light return within it, an engineer comes back to Holywell.

They service was really good and I really liked how they explained everything to me so that I made sense to me as well.

Akhigbe R.

Igor, was extremely helpful, carried out a diagnostic test and found that my DPF was cracked and needs replacing, so no point in carrying out a clean. Explained everything and gave advice. really helpful service.

Dave B.

Excellent service. Were able to come out the same day that I called. Both the person who answered my call and the engineer Dave were friendly and very knowledgeable about dpfs. My van has been running great since.

The vehicles we clean and the ground we reach near Holywell

Whatever it is — car, panel van, light commercial, HGV, plant, construction machinery, farm vehicle — the very same on-site service stands, and the filter never leaves it.

Week in week out there is already someone on B4352, so Holywell rarely means a special trip, and Bycross, Bellamore and the villages past Preston on Wye are on the way. It is the schedule, not the distance, that decides whether it is today or tomorrow, and coverage reaches UK-wide — so call anyway from farther out through Herefordshire.

Usual questions on DPF cleaning around Holywell

Is a long drive enough on its own?
Soon enough, and with the car out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. That means motorway speed for a steady run, rather than a quick trip to The Co-operative Food.
The visit takes how long?
Plan on typically around 2 hours — severely blocked filters sometimes take a second pass, which adds to it.
How much does it come to in Holywell?
The call-out charge takes in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice; the clean itself starts from £299. Quoting is done by phone, since what you run and where you are both shift the price.
Do I have to be there?
No. The vehicle requires space to stand for a couple of hours; you do not need to stand with it. Wanting to be there is no problem: the regeneration then runs out on the road, monitored.
When can someone come to Holywell?
It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is currently in the calendar. One call to 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what the HR area has free.
Does the filter come away from the car?
Not on the call-out service — it is cleaned where it sits. Nor does lifting a filter off nor bolting one back on is work we do.
The light comes back — then what?
The 30-day warranty covers aftercare, including an engineer returning to Holywell.
