Signs the motor has been sending you
Late news, the light. The symptoms generally grow for a while before it arrives:
- falling off on power, especially uphill
- you notice the revs stop short of where they used to go
- economy that is worse than before
- stop/start silently bowing out
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. The light with them suggests a loaded filter.
What chokes diesel particulate filters around Hilton

And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your own filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use.
