It may not be the DPF in the end. That is the first thing. That light can follow a number of faults, not merely one, so the visit opens with a check and not with a clean.
The motoring you get in the meantime tells. That is the second thing.
- Motor still driving fine on an amber light — have a go at a long even run first. It costs nothing at all and often shifts the filter without a visit.
- That window has shut once the motor has fallen into limp mode. A drive will not do it now.
- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it seen to.
What the car has been warning you
The light is late news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have usually been mounting for weeks:
- going uphill, the power tails off
- an engine whose revs will not climb as they should
- fuel use that is worse than it was
- quietly, the stop/start gives up
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gears
None of that is evidence alone. Next to the light with them, the filter is a fair assumption.
Choked diesel particulate filters round Hillyland, and the why
For a DPF, the least kind use is the sort you get across a residential suburb such as Hillyland. Not one bit of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration: the school run to the local primary school, Auld House Wynd crawling at the morning rush, five minutes to Tesco Extra, the hop to Perth. Unburnt soot that should burn away collects instead.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops
It is self-protection: that is all limp mode is. With pulling power held down and the revs held, the regeneration the filter wants cannot complete at all. That counts, because setting off one is exactly what a long run does.
The usual advice — get it up the motorway — is sound, right until it is not. Once the motor is in limp mode you are beyond that line, and the filter requires treatment rather than more driving.

- EGR valves that hang open
- an AdBlue system problem

- the turbo putting oil into the filter

Hollowing the filter out is not a solution: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the wording people type in, though nothing is replaced — your own filter is cleared in place and returned into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.
