The car has been telling you already
By the time the light arrives, things have normally been deteriorating for weeks. It is late news:
- power falling off, especially going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise as before
- the fuel consumption is poorer
- without a word, the stop/start bows out
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell inside
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not conclusive. It is a fair assumption the filter is full once the light is on as well.
