Before the light, what the car was showing you
Symptoms have generally been mounting for weeks before the light ever shows. Late news, in other words:
- tailing off on power, especially uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as before
- fuel use that is worse than it was
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under the throttle
That is not conclusive alone. Alongside the light with them, the filter is a fair bet.
Blocked diesel particulate filters round Hillhouse, and the reason
For a DPF, the worst use is the sort you get around a residential suburb such as Hillhouse.
