Hill-field, Herefordshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With on-site DPF cleaning, we come to the vehicle. No workshop, no filter going anywhere. A fitter drives out to your door over in Hill-field, clears the diesel particulate filter as it sits, carries out a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you started with.
You'll have a number by phone before anyone leaves, the clean starting from £299, and the visit lasting typically around 2 hours.
Written for the state most owners are in: the light showing, the motor short for power, and the visit still to fix.
DPF light on? What comes next
The filter is not automatically what is at fault, and that leads. That light can arise from plenty of faults, not merely one, so the visit starts with a diagnostic and not with a clean.
The driving you manage in the meantime counts. That is the next thing.
- Amber light, vehicle still driving as normal — a long constant run can yet shift it by itself. Costs nothing at all, and worth trying before you ring anything.
- That window has shut once the motor has slipped into limp mode. A drive will not do it now.
- A diesel smell in there, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the point to stop arranging long drives and ring.
The car has been warning you already
Symptoms have normally been building for a while before the light ever arrives. Last news, in other words:
- power dropping away, especially pulling uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they used to
- worse fuel use
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken singly, is not conclusive. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
Clogged diesel particulate filters around Hill-field, and the reason
Being a rural hamlet, Hill-field produces precisely the use a DPF copes with the poorest. A regeneration needs the time and heat, and sees none: not on the school run to Eastnor Parochial Primary School, not on Gloucester Road at half past eight, not on five minutes to The Co-operative Food, and not on the hop to Ledbury. The soot builds up rather than burning away.
Neither is distant from Hill-field: under 3 miles to the M50, under 15 miles to Gloucester. Neither is on the way to much most weeks, though, so the journey that would clear a filter hardly ever comes.
DPF regeneration, and the moment limp mode ends it
Limp mode is the car defending itself. A long drive works by triggering a regeneration, and that is just what limp mode rules out: power held down, revs held down, no regeneration available.
So the usual advice to get it up the motorway is good advice, right until it stops being. The filter requires cleaning rather than more driving once the vehicle has gone into limp mode.
Where the motor stands is where the DPF is cleaned in Hill-field
On your driveway, in a work car park, anywhere the motor can wait for a couple of hours: the job is done with the filter even now bolted on, which is the detail most owners do not anticipate.
The ECU is taken first, giving soot load by percentage and by actual weight, along with a check of sensor feeds, glow plugs and related components, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still possible.
Then the treatment. A solution is fed in through the entry point on that car and opens out inside the filter, lifting the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never budge. Where the filter is severely loaded, expect a second pass.
Next, a regeneration clears everything the clean lifted. If you are there, that is carried out as a monitored drive out of Hill-field; if not, on the spot where the vehicle sits, with the running data read afterwards.
Both reports go over by email, so the figures from either end are on record. The second scan is what proves the change, clears the light and lists whatever is still showing.
Where cleaning is not the fix
Only one fault is answered by cleaning: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does little for:
- sensors, temperature or pressure, flagging a block that is not real
- an EGR valve held open
- the AdBlue system failing
- a regeneration that never starts, because of glow plugs or injectors
- turbo failure, with oil reaching the filter
Which is why the scan comes first. Turning out to be one of them means finding out it before work begins, not after settling up for it.
A couple more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter gutted is not a fix — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is treated in place and sent back into use.
What DPF cleaning costs in Hill-field
Cleaning opens from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it pays for the call-out, the booking, the scans and the advice.
Not one flat rate would be honest, so the figure is fixed on the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. What you run and where you are both shift it: Hill-field itself, out at Donnington, or otherwise out within the HR postcode area.
If the scan counts cleaning out, there is no charge to pay for it. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone came out, ran the scan and offered you the advice.
A 30-day warranty takes in aftercare on the clean, and that includes an engineer coming back out to Hill-field if the light returns inside the period.
I RANG DPP FIXER THEY CALLED BACK WITHIN. MINUTES ORGANISED FOR THE NEXT DAY AND GUY TURNED UP AT THE APPOINTED TIME CLEANED DPP TOOK 1HR VERY PLEASED WITH SERVICE.
The engineer was very happy and explained the whole process in plain English and performed the dpf clean expertly and efficiently would recommend them to anyone.
The dpf fixer mechanic notified me of his impending arrival, carried out the clean, readings and regeneration; and explained the process. Very pleasant and informative.
Vehicles we clean, and where we get to near Hill-field
Private cars, vans and light commercials, HGVs, plant and construction machinery, farm vehicles — one on-site service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is cleaned on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.
Our engineers are along Gloucester Road week in week out, so Hill-field is seldom a journey of its own, and the same run takes in Donnington, Eastnor and the places out past Ledbury. Coverage is UK-wide, so even further out across Herefordshire is nonetheless worth a ring, and what settles between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

Questions Hill-field drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough by itself?
- It might, provided you get it early and limp mode has not begun. Five minutes to The Co-operative Food and back will not do it; motorway speed, sustained for a stretch, will.
- How long does the visit run?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly clogged filter can take cleaning twice, which takes longer.
- Price across Hill-field — what is it?
- The call-out charge pays for the visit, the check and the advice; cleaning itself begins from £299. Quoting is done by phone, since what you drive and where you sit both move the number.
- Do I have to be present?
- The vehicle wants a place for two hours or so. You do not need to be in it. Preferring to be there is welcome: the regeneration then is done out on the road, monitored.
- When can someone travel to Hill-field?
- You are looking at often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is now in the schedule. Phone 0303 330 1830 and you will know what is open across the HR area.
- Does the filter leave the car?
- On the on-site service, no: the filter is treated in place. Getting a filter off or fitting one back on come to anything a job we do either way.
- What if the light comes back?
- The 30-day warranty includes aftercare, including an engineer heading back to Hill-field.
