Before the light, what the car was warning you
The light is belated news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have normally been mounting for weeks:
- pulling uphill, the power tails off
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- consumption that is worse than before
- without a word, the stop/start packs in
- the interior reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
None of that is conclusive alone. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
